Canon's forgotten telephoto with ring-type USM — better AF motor than budget 75-300mm but still mediocre optics.

The Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM was released around 1990 as one of Canon's early EF telephoto zooms with ultrasonic motor, using a micro USM design rather than ring USM. At 540g and 58mm filter thread it is compact for a full-frame telephoto zoom covering 100-300mm. On APS-C the 160-480mm equivalent extends the effective reach. No Image Stabiliser. Micro USM AF is faster and quieter than the DC motor alternatives of the same era.

The optical design provides the 100-300mm telephoto range. Eight aperture blades. The 58mm filter thread is a common vintage Canon telephoto zoom size. At 540g the lens is compact. Minimum focus distance of 1.5m. Micro USM motor provides AF — unlike ring USM, full-time manual focus override requires switching to MF mode. No Image Stabiliser. Variable aperture from f/4.5 at 100mm to f/5.6 at 300mm.

The 100-300mm range covers portrait telephoto through wildlife and sports reach on full-frame. Without IS, minimum shutter speeds of 1/300s or faster at 300mm on full-frame are required for sharp handheld results. The micro USM motor provides functional AF for static and moderately-moving subjects in good light. As a 1990-era early EF zoom, optical quality is characteristic of that period's formula rather than modern USM zooms.

On the used market the EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM is very affordable as a vintage Canon telephoto zoom. Condition checks: micro USM AF response on a live body, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The EF 100-400mm IS II USM provides IS and ring USM at substantially higher cost. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR and R bodies via EF-RF adapter.
