Canon's professional 24-70mm f/2.8 — the Mark II is one of the sharpest standard zooms ever made.

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM was released in 2012 as the professional standard zoom for full-frame Canon EF bodies, replacing the original EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (2002) with a substantially improved optical formula. At 805g and 82mm filter thread it is the reference L-series constant f/2.8 standard zoom. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF. No IS — reflecting the professional use case where fast shutter speeds eliminate the need for stabilisation. L-series dust and moisture sealing throughout.

The optical design uses 18 elements in 13 groups. Nine aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 82mm filter thread is standard for professional f/2.8 zooms. At 805g the lens is moderate. Minimum focus distance of 0.38m. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF with full-time manual override. No optical stabilisation. Constant f/2.8 aperture. L-series dust and moisture sealing.

The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II's optical improvements over the Mk I are most visible at wide apertures: corner sharpness at f/2.8 on full-frame is substantially better, and chromatic aberration is better controlled at the standard zoom focal lengths. For event photography, portraiture, and documentary shooting where constant f/2.8 and the 24-70mm range are the primary needs, the Mk II provides the reference Canon L-series option at no IS weight penalty.
