Canon's compact L-series standard zoom with macro capability, trading aperture for features.

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM was released in 2012 as a lighter and more affordable L-series standard zoom than the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II, combining constant f/4 aperture, Hybrid IS, L-series sealing, and a macro capability at the 70mm end. The Hybrid IS stabilises for both angular camera shake and shift movement — more effective at close-focusing distances than conventional IS, making it particularly useful in the macro range. The 70mm macro mode enables 0.7x reproduction at 0.2m minimum focus.

The optical design uses 15 elements in 12 groups, including two aspherical and two UD elements. Nine aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 77mm filter thread is the L-series professional standard. At 600g the lens is lighter than the 24-70mm f/2.8L II at approximately 805g — the constant f/4 aperture accounts for the weight reduction. Standard minimum focus distance is 0.38m; in macro mode at 70mm the MFD drops to 0.2m for 0.7x magnification. Hybrid IS is built in. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built in.

The 24-70mm f/4L IS USM occupies the practical space between the 24-70mm f/2.8L II and a consumer-tier zoom: L-series sealing, ring-type USM, and constant f/4 at lower cost and weight than the f/2.8L. Hybrid IS extends handheld capability, particularly at the close-focus range where conventional IS is less effective. The 70mm macro mode with 0.7x magnification provides useful close-up capability for a standard zoom — not a substitute for a dedicated macro lens but meaningfully closer than most standard zooms.

On the used market the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM is affordable for an L-series zoom. Condition checks: ring USM response, IS engagement, L-series sealing at the zoom barrel, and 70mm macro mode function (extend zoom beyond 70mm mark to activate). The macro mode mechanism should engage and release smoothly. The Canon RF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM provides a native RF equivalent. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLRs and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
