Canon's original EF standard zoom — 28-105mm with USM autofocus, a common kit lens throughout the 1990s.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM was produced approximately 1999-2002 as a consumer standard zoom for full-frame Canon EF bodies, covering a practical 28-105mm range with ring USM autofocus. At approximately 372g and 58mm filter thread it is moderate. Two versions were produced: Version I (5 straight aperture blades) and Version II (7 blades) — the v2 with 7 blades produces smoother out-of-focus highlights.

The optical design uses 15 elements in 12 groups. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF with full-time manual override. The 58mm filter thread. At approximately 372g the lens is moderate. Minimum focus distance approximately 0.5m. Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 28mm to f/4.5 at 105mm. Full-frame coverage. Version I: 5 aperture blades; Version II (~1999 onward): 7 aperture blades.

The 28-105mm range provides a practical all-in-one range for full-frame Canon bodies: from modest wide-angle at 28mm through standard and short telephoto portrait compression at 105mm. Ring USM distinguishes it from the micro-USM kit zooms of the era: ring USM is faster and provides full-time manual override without switching AF off. The v2 with 7 blades is preferred for portrait photography where out-of-focus highlight rendering matters.

On the used market the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is very affordable as a vintage Canon standard zoom. Condition checks: ring USM AF response, 58mm front element for marks, and zoom ring smoothness. Check blade count (5 vs 7) to identify version. Compatible with all Canon EOS EF and EF-S bodies; on RF bodies via EF-RF adapter.
