Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 was a standard zoom from the first wave of EF-mount lenses for Canon's new EOS autofocus system, released in November 1987, the same year Canon introduced the EOS system and began phasing out the manual-focus FD mount.

It used 10 elements in 9 groups behind a 5-blade diaphragm closing to f/29, with a 52mm filter thread, a 0.39 metre minimum focus distance, roughly 0.22x maximum magnification, and a weight of 300 grams.

It was one of Canon's first standard zooms for the EF mount, launched months after the EOS 650 introduced Canon's autofocus system in 1987. It shared the same 9-group, 10-element optical formula as the lighter Mark II version Canon released the following year.

As one of Canon's earliest EF lenses it turns up regularly in secondhand listings, often bundled with EOS 650 or similar film bodies, at low prices. Buyers should check the autofocus coupling engages cleanly, test the zoom ring for smooth travel, and inspect elements for age-related haze.
