Canon's beloved EF pancake lens, one of the thinnest Canon lenses ever made.

The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM was released in 2012 as Canon's first pancake lens for the EF mount, designed around a compact optical formula to produce the smallest and flattest EF prime available. At approximately 23mm in depth it creates a flat camera-body profile with slim Canon EOS bodies — the SL2 and SL3 in particular reduce to near-compact-camera dimensions with the 40mm STM attached. The STM motor enables quiet continuous autofocus suited to video recording on all EOS bodies that support continuous autofocus in movie mode.

The optical design uses 6 elements in 4 groups, including one aspherical element. Seven aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The 52mm filter thread is the standard Nikon DX kit size and compatible with most travel filter collections. At 130g the lens adds negligible weight to any EOS body. Minimum focus distance of 0.3m. The STM motor provides near-silent, fast autofocus with full-time manual focus override. The full-frame image circle makes the lens compatible with both full-frame and APS-C EOS bodies without crop mode.

The 40mm full-frame perspective is a slightly tight standard field of view — between the 35mm standard-wide and the 50mm normal. For street photography, travel, and casual documentary work the 40mm provides a natural but moderately compressed perspective in a package that adds virtually no bulk to the camera body. At 130g the combination of body and lens is the lightest possible EF configuration for any standard focal length. The STM motor makes it practical for video on bodies with DPAF or silent touch-focus operation.

On the used market the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is one of the most affordable Canon L-and-non-L primes. Condition checks: STM motor response, front element for any cleaning marks, and 52mm filter thread for any damage. For APS-C bodies the 64mm equivalent provides a slightly telephoto street perspective. The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is the native RF equivalent for EOS R users at similar pricing. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLRs (full-frame and APS-C) and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
