Budget Canon EF telephoto zoom from 1998, offering basic reach for beginners on a tight budget.

The Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM was released as a budget consumer telephoto zoom for Canon EOS APS-C bodies, providing an 88-320mm full-frame equivalent range. The II designation introduced a USM motor for faster, quieter autofocus over the original 55-200mm. This is a compact, lightweight consumer telephoto aimed at kit lens upgraders wanting more reach. The lens has been discontinued and replaced by the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM in Canon's current lineup.

The optical design uses an unusual 13 elements in 13 groups — one element per group throughout. Six aperture blades produce standard out-of-focus rendering. The 52mm filter thread is a common Canon consumer size. At 310g the lens is light for a 200mm telephoto zoom. Minimum focus distance of 1.2m suits the telephoto use case. The USM motor is a micro USM type — full-time manual focus override is not available without switching to MF mode. No Image Stabiliser. Variable aperture from f/4.5 at 55mm to f/5.6 at 200mm.

The 55-200mm II USM's lightweight 310g design makes it easy to carry as a telephoto addition to an APS-C kit. Without IS, shutter speeds at 200mm on APS-C require at least 1/320s for sharp handheld results with most subjects. The absence of IS limits usefulness in lower light and makes video handheld telephoto work impractical. For outdoor daylight photography where the 88-320mm equivalent provides adequate reach at modest weight, the lens is functional as an affordable entry telephoto.

On the used market the EF 55-200mm II USM is very affordable as a discontinued Canon consumer telephoto. Condition checks: micro USM AF response for smooth acquisition, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS STM provides IS and an STM motor at a modest premium and is the recommended alternative for current APS-C shooting. Compatible with all Canon EOS APS-C DSLR bodies; the APS-C image circle prevents use on full-frame EOS bodies without significant vignetting.
