Canon's flagship 600mm super-telephoto — Mark II with improved IS and lighter weight vs Mark I.

The Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM was released approximately 2011 as the second-generation flagship Canon super-telephoto prime. The IS II generation introduced a new fluorite-element optical design and magnesium-polycarbonate hybrid barrel that reduced weight by approximately 910g versus the prior IS I generation.

f/4 constant aperture. 19 elements in 14 groups, including two fluorite elements and one UD element. Drop-in 52mm rear filter slot. At approximately 3,920g. IS II (approximately four-stop correction). Three IS modes. Canon EF mount. Minimum focus 5.5m. Compatible with Canon EF 1.4× III and 2× III extenders.

The drop-in rear filter slot accepts circular polarising and ND filters without requiring oversized front filters. Fluorite elements correct chromatic and thermal aberrations while reducing weight versus equivalent glass elements. IS Mode 3 activates stabilisation only at the moment of shutter release, reducing viewfinder blur during subject tracking for panning shots.

On the used market the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM is a professional super-telephoto at significant cost even secondhand. Condition checks: front dioptric correction filter for chips or cracks, IS operation and Mode switching, AF acquisition and tracking speed (test with moving subjects), tripod collar rotation and locking. The IS III (third generation, ~2018) succeeded this lens. Compatible with Canon RF bodies via EF-RF adapter.
