The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM was released in 2004 as the Diffractive Optic telephoto zoom for Canon EF full-frame, using a three-layer diffractive optical element to reduce lens length by approximately 28% versus a conventional design — identified by the green ring on the barrel. Eighteen elements in 12 groups. Six rounded aperture blades. 58mm filter thread. At 720g. 1.4m MFD.

The diffractive optic (DO) element reduces the physical length needed to achieve 70-300mm coverage: the diffractive grating corrects chromatic aberration with fewer elements than a conventional refractive design, allowing a more compact barrel. The green ring (versus the red ring of L-series lenses) identifies DO designation — it is not an L-series lens despite the USM motor.
