Great for: general wildlife sport travel

Canon's cheapest telephoto — notoriously soft with no IS, no USM, DC motor — widely considered their worst lens.

The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 was released in 1991 as the original consumer telephoto zoom for the EF system, one of the earliest EF zoom lenses. It uses a DC motor for autofocus — slower and noisier than the USM variant released in 1992. At approximately 480g and 58mm filter thread it is compact for a full-frame telephoto. On APS-C the 120-480mm equivalent extends the effective reach. The 'II' (1995) and 'III USM' (1999) are successive updates.

The optical design uses 13 elements in 9 groups. Seven aperture blades. The 58mm filter thread is consistent across the entire 75-300mm family. At approximately 480g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 1.5m. DC motor AF is functional but slower and noisier than USM. No Image Stabiliser. Variable aperture from f/4 at 75mm to f/5.6 at 300mm.

The 75-300mm range provides portrait telephoto through wildlife and sports reach on full-frame; on APS-C the 120-480mm equivalent extends further. Without IS, minimum shutter speeds of 1/300s at 300mm on full-frame are required for sharp handheld results. The original DC motor provides adequate AF for static subjects in good daylight — for moving subjects, the response is a limitation compared to the USM version. As the first-generation 75-300mm it is the origin of a multi-generation Canon budget telephoto lineup.

On the used market the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 (original) is very affordable. Condition checks: DC motor AF response on a live body, zoom ring smoothness, aperture blades for oil contamination, and front element for marks. The EF 75-300mm II (1995) and III USM (1999) are updated successors. The EF 70-300mm IS II USM provides IS and Nano USM. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR and R bodies via EF-RF adapter.
