Canon's second-generation consumer 75-300mm with USM motor, marginally better than the III.

The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II USM was released in the 1990s as a budget telephoto zoom for Canon EOS APS-C and full-frame bodies. The II designation introduced USM autofocus, providing faster and quieter AF than the original model. On APS-C the 75-300mm covers a 120-480mm full-frame equivalent range. The lens has been discontinued; it was succeeded by the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM for buyers wanting a current Canon consumer telephoto.

The optical design uses 13 elements in 9 groups. Seven aperture blades produce standard out-of-focus rendering. The 58mm filter thread is consistent with several Canon consumer primes and zooms. At 480g the lens is moderate for a 300mm consumer telephoto zoom. Minimum focus distance of 1.5m suits telephoto photography. The USM motor is a micro USM type — full-time manual focus override is not available without switching to MF. No Image Stabiliser. Variable aperture from f/4 at 75mm to f/5.6 at 300mm.

The 75-300mm II USM is a budget vintage telephoto for EOS bodies. Without IS, the lens requires sufficient shutter speed at the telephoto end — at 300mm on full-frame, 1/300s minimum, or 1/480s on APS-C — for sharp handheld results with static subjects. The absence of IS limits usefulness in lower light and makes handheld video telephoto impractical. For outdoor daylight photography the 75-300mm range provides adequate telephoto coverage at minimal cost.

On the used market the EF 75-300mm II USM is very affordable as a discontinued budget Canon telephoto. Condition checks: micro USM AF response, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM (2016) provides Nano USM and IS at a modest premium on the used market and is the recommended modern replacement. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR and R bodies via EF-RF adapter.
