Canon's well-regarded ultra-fast 85mm portrait prime with dreamlike rendering at f/1.2.

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM was released in 2006 as the second-generation L-series 85mm portrait prime, the fastest autofocus Canon L prime at f/1.2 maximum aperture. At 1,025g and 72mm filter thread it is a substantial portrait prime. The ring USM motor provides silent autofocus with full-time manual focus override. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built throughout. At f/1.2 the depth of field at portrait distances is extremely shallow — accurate AF is the critical performance requirement.

The optical design uses 8 elements in 7 groups. Eight aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 72mm filter thread is shared with several Canon L-series primes. At 1,025g the lens is the heaviest Canon L prime in the standard focal length range. Minimum focus distance of 0.95m. Ring USM provides fast, silent AF with full-time manual override. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built in. f/1.2 maximum aperture. Due to the large entrance pupil at f/1.2, AF speed is notably slower than faster-aperture USM primes.

The f/1.2 maximum aperture provides depth of field at portrait distances approximately 2/3 of a stop shallower than f/1.4 alternatives and 1.3 stops shallower than f/1.8. For portrait work where background separation is the primary creative objective and subject isolation at head-and-shoulders framing is paramount, the f/1.2 provides the maximum available selective focus from any production Canon EF prime. The 85mm perspective is the classic portrait focal length for flattering head-and-shoulders compression.

On the used market the EF 85mm f/1.2L II is available at premium L-series portrait prime pricing. Condition checks: ring USM AF response — notably slower than the f/1.4 or f/1.8 at f/1.2 due to the large glass elements — L-series sealing, and 72mm front element for any marks. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM provides the native RF equivalent. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR and R bodies via EF-RF adapter.
