The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS was released in 2011 as the flagship PowerShot superzoom, featuring a 35× optical zoom covering 24-840mm equivalent on a 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS 12.1MP sensor. Variable aperture from f/2.7 at wide to f/5.8 at tele. 1080/24fps video (24fps primary; 720/30fps also available). Intelligent IS. At approximately 600g with battery and card.

The 840mm equivalent telephoto reach at the 35× zoom end covers wildlife, aviation, and astronomy subject capture from extreme distances. The 1080/24fps video uses Canon's cinematic 24fps framing preference of the era rather than the more common 30fps — 30fps is available at 720p. The 640×480/120fps mode provides 4× slow-motion playback at standard 30fps.
