The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM was released in 2018 at the launch of the Canon RF system as a statement optical achievement: the first standard zoom with a constant f/2 aperture across the full 28-70mm range, a specification previously unavailable in any zoom lens. At 1,430g and 95mm filter thread it is the heaviest and largest lens in the RF standard range. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built throughout.

The optical design uses 19 elements in 13 groups. Nine circular aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 95mm filter thread requires a dedicated filter set. At 1,430g the lens is substantially heavier than the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II (805g). Minimum focus distance of 0.39m at 28mm. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF with full-time manual override. Constant f/2 aperture throughout. L-series dust and moisture sealing.

The constant f/2 aperture is 1 stop faster than any f/2.8 standard zoom — providing one extra stop of exposure and depth-of-field control at every focal length in the 28-70mm range. At 70mm and f/2, background separation and low-light capability is equivalent to a dedicated 85mm f/2.8 portrait prime with zoom flexibility. For event photography, indoor portraiture, and low-light documentary work where maximum aperture is the primary need, the f/2 aperture justifies the size and weight premium over f/2.8 alternatives.

On the used market the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM commands a significant premium over the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. Condition checks: ring USM AF response, L-series sealing, 95mm front element for marks, and overall barrel condition given the weight. The RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM provides IS and a wider 24mm start at approximately half the weight. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount EOS R bodies.
