Canon's flagship RF prime — f/1.2 at 50mm with L-series build, unprecedented wide-open sharpness for this speed.

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM was released in 2018 at the Canon RF system launch as the reference 50mm standard prime with f/1.2 maximum aperture — the fastest Canon standard prime ever produced. At 950g and 77mm filter thread it is heavier than any preceding Canon 50mm prime. Ten aperture blades produce near-circular bokeh. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built throughout.

The f/1.2 at 50mm on full-frame is one stop faster than f/1.4, providing deeper background blur and one additional stop of low-light exposure. The ten-blade aperture produces circular out-of-focus highlights at intermediate apertures (f/2, f/2.8) where fewer-blade designs show polygon shapes. The RF mount's short flange distance enables the f/1.2 formula without the retrofocus compromises required in SLR-mount 50mm f/1.2 designs.

On the used market the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM commands a significant premium among RF standard primes. Condition checks: ring USM AF response, L-series sealing, 77mm front element for marks, and overall barrel condition given the weight.
