The Casio Exilim EX-Z40 is an early Exilim Zoom compact that Casio launched in February 2004, at a time when slim all-metal digital cameras with a genuine zoom lens were still a novelty against the fixed-focal-length Exilim Card models that preceded them.

It has a 4-megapixel sensor paired with a 3x optical zoom lens, a rear LCD for composition and review, and stores images on SD/MMC cards. The camera runs on Casio's NP-40 rechargeable lithium-ion battery and features a metal chassis typical of the early Exilim Zoom range.

For 2004 the EX-Z40 stood out mainly for combining Casio's signature slim metal body with real zoom flexibility, at a time when most ultra-thin compacts sacrificed zoom range entirely; resolution and low-light performance are modest by later standards.
