The Leitz Summitar 50mm f/2 is a seven-element standard lens produced from 1939 to 1954 for the Leica Thread Mount (LTM/L39). The Summitar preceded the Summicron and represents an intermediate optical quality between the earlier Summar and the later Summicron. The seven-element formula delivers a distinctive rendering with characteristic smooth bokeh.

50mm focal length, f/2 maximum aperture, seven-element Summitar formula (pre-Summicron), Leica Thread Mount (L39/LTM) screw mount, rangefinder-coupled.

The Summitar is regarded as a transitional lens — sharper and better corrected than the earlier Summar, but not quite as good as the Summicron that replaced it. Its distinctive rendering, particularly at f/2, has attracted photographers who appreciate the 'character' of pre-war and immediate post-war optical designs. Compatible with Leica M cameras via L39-to-M adapter.
