Mamiya's mid-1960s 35mm leaf-shutter SLR — fixed 48mm f/2.8 Sekor, selenium auto exposure, UK-badged Rank.

The Mamiya Auto-Lux 35 is a fixed-lens 35mm leaf-shutter SLR produced from around 1963 to 1967. Unusually for an SLR it combines reflex viewing with a between-the-lens shutter and automatic exposure. In the UK it was distributed and badged by Rank, hence the 'Rank Mamiya' name. It is long discontinued.

The camera exposes 35mm film through a fixed Mamiya-Sekor 48mm f/2.8 lens of three elements. An external selenium meter drives shutter-priority automatic exposure alongside a manual mode, reading ASA 10 to 400. The Copal-X leaf shutter runs from 1/15 to 1/500 plus B with flash sync at all speeds via X and PC sockets. Focus goes down to about three feet, the filter thread is 40.5mm, and film advances by a manual lever.

Its leaf-shutter reflex layout with selenium-metered auto exposure sets it apart from the focal-plane SLRs of the era, at the cost of a non-interchangeable lens and a bulkier body. This combination makes it primarily a camera for collectors of 1960s Japanese SLRs and shooters who enjoy leaf-shutter handling.

On the used market the selenium meter is the key concern: many are dead or weak, so test its response before relying on auto exposure. Check the leaf shutter fires at all speeds without sticking and inspect the light seals. Comparable leaf-shutter SLRs include the Kodak Retina Reflex and Voigtlander Bessamatic.
