Minolta's Hi-Matic 7s — fixed-lens 35mm rangefinder, 45mm f/1.8 Rokkor, auto and manual exposure, 1966.

The Minolta Hi-Matic 7s, from 1966, was an updated model in Minolta's Hi-Matic line of fixed-lens 35mm rangefinders. It revised the Hi-Matic 7, adding flash-related exposure control, and continued the series' combination of automatic and manual exposure.

This is a 35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with a fixed 45mm f/1.8 Rokkor lens and a mechanical leaf shutter. Exposure can be shutter-priority automatic using a built-in CdS meter or set fully manually, and it adds provision for flash exposure. The leaf shutter fires mechanically, while the meter and automation require a battery.

The Hi-Matic 7s suits general, street and travel photography for users who want a fast Rokkor lens with both automatic and manual exposure. The coupled rangefinder focuses accurately and the solid metal body is durable, though it remains a large and heavy camera by later standards.

When buying, test the CdS meter and note the original mercury cell is obsolete, so a substitute is generally needed. Check the lens for haze and fungus, confirm the leaf shutter and aperture blades operate cleanly, and verify rangefinder patch contrast and alignment. Replace perished light seals as needed.
