Minolta released the V 28-56mm f/4-5.6 in 1996 as the standard zoom for its Vectis APS-film SLR system, launched alongside the Vectis S-1 body. The V-mount was Minolta's only new lens mount built for the short-lived Advanced Photo System, and this lens served as the everyday kit zoom before the system was discontinued as APS film declined.

Focal length of 28-56mm gives roughly a 35-70mm field of view once the smaller APS frame's approximate 1.25x crop is accounted for. The lens has a variable f/4-5.6 maximum aperture closing to f/22, a 40.5mm filter thread, a minimum focus distance of 0.35m, autofocus operation, and a compact plastic body weighing around 117g.
