Nikon's classic manual-ish 24mm wide-angle for F-mount — AF version of the well-regarded Nikkor 24mm design.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D is a screwdrive autofocus wide-angle prime for Nikon F-mount, providing a 24mm moderate wide perspective with D-type distance encoding for flash metering. At 270g and 52mm filter thread it is compact for a full-frame wide prime. Autofocus requires a body with a built-in AF drive motor. On APS-C the 24mm provides a 36mm equivalent.

The optical design uses 9 elements in 9 groups. Seven aperture blades. The 52mm filter thread is a Nikon heritage standard. At 270g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.3m. Screwdrive AF requires a body with an internal AF drive motor — D40/D60 and D3xxx/D5xxx bodies will not autofocus this lens. f/2.8 maximum aperture. D designation provides distance information to the metering system.

The 24mm perspective on full-frame provides moderate wide environmental coverage for photojournalism, travel, and architectural photography without the extreme distortion of ultra-wides. At f/2.8, adequate indoor available-light capability is provided. The 0.3m MFD enables close foreground elements with wide background context. As a 1990s-era design the 9/9 formula shows typical vintage characteristics wide-open.

On the used market the Nikon AF Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D is affordable as a vintage Nikon wide prime. Condition checks: screwdrive AF on a compatible body, aperture blades for oil contamination, and front element for marks. The AF-S 24mm f/1.8G provides SWM and wider aperture. Compatible with Nikon F-mount bodies with built-in AF drive motors.
