Nikon's budget body-drive standard zoom — basic 28-80mm D-type for film and early digital Nikon bodies.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6D exists in two versions: Version I (1995-1999, 7 elements/7 groups, 5 blades) and the more common Version II (1999-2001, 8 elements/8 groups, 7 rounded blades). The D designation indicates a distance information chip for 3D Matrix metering and i-TTL flash — not an autofocus motor type. Screw-drive AF on both versions. 58mm filter thread. Approximately 205g. 0.40m MFD.

Version II optical design: 8 elements in 8 groups. Seven rounded aperture blades. The 58mm filter thread. At approximately 205g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.40m. Screw-drive AF — no in-lens motor. Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 28mm to f/5.6 at 80mm. D-type distance information chip. Full-frame coverage (FX and DX).

The 28-80mm range was Nikon's consumer kit zoom for film-era and early digital SLR bodies: 28mm moderate wide through 80mm short portrait compression. The D-type chip improves flash metering accuracy via subject distance data. The 7-blade rounded aperture (Version II) provides smoother out-of-focus rendering than the 5-blade Version I.

On the used market the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6D is very affordable as a vintage consumer Nikon zoom. Condition checks: AF coupling for wear (screw-drive), 58mm front element for marks, zoom ring smoothness. Note version: Version I has 5 straight blades; Version II has 7 rounded. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount FX and DX bodies.
