The Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D was released in 1987 (non-D) and updated to the D-type version in 1992 as a standard zoom for Nikon F-mount full-frame. Fifteen elements in 12 groups. Seven aperture blades. 62mm filter thread. At 665g. ~0.6m MFD. Push-pull zoom mechanism. D-type distance encoding.

The 35-70mm f/2.8D uses a push-pull zoom: sliding the barrel toward the camera extends from 70mm to 35mm. The push-pull design provides single-hand zoom and focus in photojournalism applications. The D-type distance encoding transmits subject distance to compatible Nikon bodies for 3D matrix metering and TTL flash. The constant f/2.8 provides consistent aperture across the standard zoom range.
