Nikon's classic screw-drive 50mm f/1.4 — D designation with distance encoding, compact and affordable.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D was released in 1995 as the D-type update to Nikon's standard 50mm prime, adding distance encoding to the metering system. Autofocus is screwdrive — requiring a Nikon body with an internal AF drive motor. At 155g and 52mm filter thread it is a compact standard prime. The f/1.4 maximum aperture provides low-light capability and background separation at portrait distances. The 'D' designation enables distance-based flash exposure metering.

The optical design uses 7 elements in 6 groups. Seven aperture blades produce rounded bokeh. The 52mm filter thread is a Nikon heritage standard. At 155g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.45m. Screwdrive AF requires a body with an internal AF drive motor — D40/D60 and D3xxx/D5xxx bodies will not autofocus this lens. f/1.4 maximum aperture. D designation enables distance-based metering for flash exposure calculation.

The AF-D 50mm f/1.4 uses the classic double-Gauss formula: 7 elements in 6 groups providing f/1.4 capability in a 155g body. Wide-open at f/1.4, the vintage formula shows characteristic spherical aberration and coma — visible as soft rendering and slight glow around bright subjects — that improve substantially by f/2. For photographers who value the f/1.4 aperture for subject isolation and low-light work, the AF-D provides the capability at very low used cost.

On the used market the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D is very affordable as a vintage Nikon standard prime. Condition checks: screwdrive AF engagement on a compatible body, aperture blades for oil contamination — a known issue on aged D-series lenses causing sticky or sluggish aperture operation — and front element for marks. The AF-S 50mm f/1.4G provides SWM AF and improved wide-open performance. Compatible with Nikon F-mount bodies with built-in AF drive motors.
