Nikon's original VR super-telephoto zoom — screw-drive AF with push-pull zoom and first-generation vibration reduction.

The Nikon AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED was released around 2000 as Nikon's first VR (Vibration Reduction) super-telephoto zoom, providing approximately 2 stops of stabilisation for handheld telephoto use. The 'D' designation provides distance information to the metering system. Autofocus is screwdrive — requiring a Nikon body with an internal AF drive motor. At 1,360g and 77mm filter thread it is substantial, benefiting from monopod support for extended sessions.

The optical design uses 17 elements in 11 groups including 3 ED elements. Nine aperture blades. The 77mm filter thread is the Nikon professional standard. At 1,360g the lens benefits from monopod support. Minimum focus distance of 2.3m. VR I provides approximately 2 stops of compensation. Screwdrive AF requires a body with an internal AF drive motor — D40/D60 and D3xxx/D5xxx bodies will not autofocus this lens. Variable aperture from f/4.5 at 80mm to f/5.6 at 400mm.

The 80-400mm VR D's practical position is as Nikon's original VR super-telephoto zoom: at 400mm with approximately 2 stops of VR, handheld shots at 1/200s or faster are achievable for wildlife and sports in adequate light. The screwdrive AF is functional on compatible bodies but slower than SWM (Silent Wave Motor) lenses — for fast-moving subjects the AF response is a limitation. The 3 ED elements reduce chromatic aberration at the telephoto end.

On the used market the AF 80-400mm D VR is affordable for a super-telephoto VR zoom. The AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR (2013) provides SWM AF and improved VR at significantly higher cost. Condition checks: VR engagement, screwdrive AF response on a compatible body — confirm the body has a built-in AF drive motor — 77mm front element for marks, and zoom ring smoothness. Compatible with Nikon F-mount bodies with internal AF drive motors; bodies without one require manual focus only.
