Nikon's original AF 85mm f/1.8 — pre-D-type portrait prime for F-mount, the predecessor to the D version.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 (original non-D version, ~1988) is the first autofocus 85mm f/1.8 for Nikon F-mount. Six elements in 6 groups. Nine aperture blades. 62mm filter thread. At approximately 366-380g. 0.85m MFD. Screw-drive AF — body motor required. Distinguished from the later f/1.8D by the absence of D-type distance encoding.

Screw-drive AF (body motor). f/1.8 maximum aperture. Full-frame coverage. Non-D version — no distance information chip. Nikon F-mount.

The non-D AF 85mm f/1.8 uses the same optical formula as the later D version — the 'D' suffix added only the distance information CPU chip for improved 3D Matrix metering and i-TTL flash, not optical changes. For bodies without D-type iTTL flash need, the non-D provides identical image quality. Screw-drive AF requires a camera body with a built-in AF drive motor.
