Nikon's affordable 85mm portrait prime for F-mount — sharp, lightweight, and an excellent value on the used market.

The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D is a screwdrive autofocus portrait prime for Nikon F-mount, providing 85mm focal length at f/1.8 with D-type distance encoding for flash metering. At 380g and 62mm filter thread it is lightweight for an f/1.8 portrait prime. Autofocus requires a body with a built-in AF drive motor. The 6-element double-Gauss formula is a classic compact portrait prime design.

The optical design uses 6 elements in 6 groups. Nine aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 62mm filter thread is standard. At 380g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.85m. Screwdrive AF requires a body with an internal AF drive motor — D40/D60 and D3xxx/D5xxx bodies will not autofocus this lens. f/1.8 maximum aperture. D designation provides distance information.

The AF-D 85mm f/1.8 is the classic affordable Nikon portrait prime: the double-Gauss 6-element formula provides f/1.8 capability at 380g and minimal cost. Wide open at f/1.8, the vintage formula shows characteristic spherical aberration — slight glow on bright-background subjects — that tightens substantially by f/2.8. For portrait photographers who want f/1.8 at 85mm without the AF-S f/1.8G cost, the D version remains practical.

On the used market the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D is very affordable as a vintage Nikon portrait prime. Condition checks: screwdrive AF on a compatible body, aperture blades for oil contamination — a known issue on aged D-series lenses causing sticky aperture — and front element for marks. The AF-S 85mm f/1.8G provides SWM and improved wide-open performance. Compatible with Nikon F-mount bodies with built-in AF drive motors.
