The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED was released in 2003 as Nikon's professional constant f/2.8 standard zoom for DX-format bodies, providing a 25.5-82.5mm full-frame equivalent range. It is the DX counterpart to the FX-format AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8, establishing a constant f/2.8 standard zoom for professional DX shooters. IF (Internal Focus) and ED glass are included. At 755g and 77mm filter thread it is a professional-weight DX zoom.

The optical design uses 14 elements in 10 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 77mm filter thread is the Nikon professional standard, consistent with the AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR series. At 755g the lens is substantial for a DX zoom. Minimum focus distance of 0.36m. IF (Internal Focus) maintains a constant barrel length during focus changes. No Vibration Reduction — stabilisation relies on shutter speed technique or body IBIS on compatible bodies. AF-S SWM provides fast, quiet AF. Constant f/2.8 throughout.

The 25.5-82.5mm equivalent at constant f/2.8 covers the full professional standard range for event, wedding, and photojournalism on DX bodies — matching the f/2.8 standard zoom that full-frame bodies carry at 24-70mm. The constant f/2.8 is the defining capability: for indoor events, low-light documentary, and situations where depth-of-field control at moderate focal lengths is required, the f/2.8 provides capability that variable-aperture alternatives cannot match.
