Nikon's professional full-frame ultra-wide zoom — a gold-ring workhorse for photojournalists and landscape shooters.

The Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED was released in 1999 as the wide-angle professional zoom for Nikon F-mount, providing constant f/2.8 across the 17-35mm range with Silent Wave Motor and Internal Focus. The 'D' designation provides distance information to the metering system, and the lens includes a mechanical aperture ring with AI ridge for compatibility with older Nikon bodies. At 745g and 77mm filter thread it is a professional wide constant-aperture zoom.

The optical design uses 13 elements in 10 groups with ED glass. Nine aperture blades. The 77mm filter thread is the Nikon professional standard. At 745g the lens is moderate. Minimum focus distance of 0.28m throughout. Silent Wave Motor provides fast, quiet AF with full-time manual override. Constant f/2.8 aperture. Mechanical aperture ring with AI ridge for compatibility with older Nikon bodies.

The 17-35mm constant f/2.8 covers the practical wide-angle range for architectural, landscape, and event photography: at 17mm, environmental interior and dramatic landscape framing is achievable; at 35mm, documentary and street framing is covered. The 0.28m MFD enables close-wide environmental foreground compositions. The IF mechanism maintains barrel length during focus for clean optical behaviour.

On the used market the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED is affordable as a vintage professional Nikon wide-angle zoom. Condition checks: SWM AF response, aperture ring operation and AI ridge, 77mm front element for marks, and zoom ring smoothness. The AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G provides a wider range at higher cost. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount bodies; Nikon Z bodies via the FTZ adapter.
