Nikon's classic professional standard zoom — 28-70mm f/2.8 that served pros before the 24-70mm.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED was released approximately 1999 as Nikon's professional full-frame standard zoom, designed for photojournalism and studio work on FX and DX bodies. It was the primary constant-aperture standard zoom in the Nikon professional lineup before the 24-70mm f/2.8G replaced it in 2007. Nikon F mount.

f/2.8 constant aperture. 18 elements in 15 groups, including ED (extra-low dispersion) elements. Internal focus (IF). 77mm filter thread. At approximately 935g. AF-S (silent wave motor). Minimum focus approximately 0.38m. No VR. Nikon F mount.

The IF (internal focusing) design keeps the lens length constant during focusing, preventing barrel rotation and maintaining consistent handling ergonomics. ED elements reduce chromatic aberration at f/2.8 across the zoom range. The 28-70mm range was the professional standard zoom convention before the industry shifted to 24-70mm; the 28mm wide end is noticeably less wide than the modern 24mm standard.
