Nikon's 2011 slim compact — 12MP CCD and a 4x 27-108mm zoom, twin of the Coolpix S2500.

The Nikon Coolpix S2550 was a slim, pocketable compact from the entry level of Nikon's Coolpix S 'style' line, sold in Europe and Asia around 2011. It was a market-specific sibling to the Coolpix S2500, sharing the same body and lens under a different model number, and was pitched as an affordable everyday snapshot camera rather than a photographer's tool.

It used a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor of roughly 12 megapixels with a 4x optical zoom covering a 27-108mm equivalent range. A 2.7-inch TFT LCD was the only viewfinder, and files were stored on SD/SDHC cards. Power came from a proprietary EN-EL19 lithium-ion battery. Video was recorded at VGA 640x480 resolution, and the camera used electronic vibration reduction and motion detection rather than optical stabilisation.

The S2550 suited casual travel and family snapshots where light weight and simple operation mattered more than control. Its zoom range was modest and the CCD worked best in good light, with noise rising quickly at higher ISO. Autofocus was contrast-based and unhurried, and there was no raw capture, making it a general and beginner camera rather than a creative one.

On the used market, check the extending zoom for grinding or hesitation, and inspect the LCD for dead or stuck pixels. Confirm the battery and card door latch shuts firmly and that a working EN-EL19 is included, since these now rely on aftermarket cells. Look for sensor dust and lens haze on older units. Values are low, so it sells as a budget point-and-shoot; a Canon IXUS of the same era is a natural alternative.
