The 20.8MP FX CMOS sensor pairs with dual EXPEED 5 processors. The 153-point AF system provides 99 cross-type points. Burst shooting runs at 12fps (14fps with AE lock). 4K/30fps records with a 1.5x crop. EN-EL18a battery provides approximately 3,780 shots. Body weight approximately 1,405g with battery and card. Dual card slots — XQD or CF depending on the purchased version.

The Multi-CAM 20K's 99 cross-type points covering approximately 59% of the frame is the D5's professional tracking capability: cross-type sensors acquire both horizontal and vertical contrast for more reliable subject lock versus single-axis sensors. The EN-EL18a's ~3,780-shot capacity reflects the professional design for all-day event and sports coverage without recharge. The XQD and CF variants have identical image quality — card slot type is the primary differentiator.
