Semi-professional Nikon film SLR from 1992 — the N90 in North America — introducing 3D Matrix metering and 5-area AF to the consumer market.

The Nikon F90 (N90 in North America, 1992) is a semi-professional 35mm AF SLR from Nikon, positioned below the F4 and above the F601 in Nikon's film SLR range. It introduced the 3D Matrix metering system and advanced AF tracking to a sub-professional tier, with build quality and features aimed at serious enthusiasts and working photographers.

35mm AF SLR, Nikon F mount, 5-area Multi-CAM900 AF, 3D Matrix/centre-weighted/spot metering, built-in pop-up flash, top shutter speed 1/8000s, 4.3fps motor drive (with MB-10 grip), DX coding.

The F90's 1/8000s top shutter speed and 3D Matrix metering were significant at its class in 1992. All Nikon F-mount lenses (AI through AF-S) are compatible. The optional MB-10 battery grip adds vertical controls and boosts frame rate. Compared to the F90X (N90S, 1994 update), the standard F90 has a slightly slower AF system but is otherwise equivalent. A respected workhorse camera for film photography.

Test 3D Matrix metering in mixed lighting. Test AF tracking at 4.3fps (with MB-10 grip if included). Check light seals. Test pop-up flash and all metering modes. Load film to verify advance and frame spacing. Check battery grip coupling if included.
