Nikon's original Ai 50mm f/1.4 — pre-Ai-S coupling for the early meter-coupled Nikon system.

The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Ai is a fast standard prime from Nikon's Ai (Automatic Indexing) era of 35mm SLR lenses, providing f/1.4 maximum aperture in a compact, lightweight package. Manual focus only. Nikon F mount.

f/1.4 maximum aperture. 50mm focal length. Ai coupling (aperture-coupled manual, CPU-less). Seven elements in six groups. 52mm filter thread. At approximately 250g. Manual focus only. Nikon F mount.

The Ai designation indicates compatibility with Nikon's aperture-indexing metering mechanism introduced in 1977. The 50mm f/1.4 Ai provides standard normal coverage at fast f/1.4 aperture for available-light photography. Optical quality is good for a 1970s-era design; the f/1.4 Ai-S (successor) added shutter-speed-priority coupling.
