The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is Nikon's professional standard zoom for the Z mirrorless system, launched in 2019. Designed from scratch to exploit the Z-mount's wider 55mm inner diameter and 16mm flange distance, it delivers optical performance that exceeds the F-mount AF-S 24-70mm predecessors. The S-Line designation marks Nikon's highest optical tier, indicating premium glass, multi-layer coatings, and optical correction beyond the standard Nikkor Z range. It effectively replaced the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR as the definitive professional standard zoom for Nikon full-frame shooters, now natively matched to the Z-mount geometry.

The optical design uses 17 elements in 15 groups. Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat minimise flare and ghosting across a wider range of light angles than single-coating systems. The 82mm filter thread is shared with the Z 24-120mm f/4 S — practical carry-over across the two most common Nikon Z standard zoom choices. At 805g the lens is competitive in weight for a professional mirrorless f/2.8 standard zoom. A minimum focus distance of 0.38m allows close subject work across the zoom range. The customisable control ring allows aperture, ISO, or exposure compensation to be assigned to the barrel. The OLED information display shows aperture, focus distance, and depth of field. Comprehensive weather sealing is built in throughout. The autofocus motor is fast, silent, and accurate.

In professional use the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S produces image quality that clearly surpasses the F-mount predecessors, particularly in corner resolution and distortion control. The 24mm end provides genuine environmental coverage without visible barrel distortion. Bokeh at f/2.8 is smooth and natural — well rendered at 70mm for portraiture and events. The OLED display and control ring add practical ergonomic value in working conditions. At 805g it is heavy but consistent with other professional f/2.8 standard zooms. Autofocus is fast and confident for portrait, event, and moderate-action work.

On the used market the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S holds value well, consistent with professional standard zoom demand. The 82mm filter thread is shared across Nikon's Z professional S-Line zooms, enabling filter carry-over within the system. Check the OLED display for function, AF motor, and weather seals. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Z-mount offers a less expensive alternative at the cost of the 24mm wide end. The adapted F-mount 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR is optically inferior.
