The lens delivers 35mm at f/1.4 maximum aperture with Nikon's Z-mount electronic coupling for full autofocus and EXIF support, full-frame Z-mount coverage, and a compact design relative to the S-line equivalent. Autofocus uses a stepping motor system.

The Z 35mm f/1.4 sits below the S-line in Nikon's Z optics hierarchy — it is smaller, lighter, and more affordable than the 35mm f/1.8 S, accepting optical trade-offs at wide aperture for the reduced size and price. For photographers primarily shooting at f/2 and smaller, the performance gap is minimal. The f/1.4 maximum aperture gives a stop advantage over the f/1.8 S in the most light-constrained situations.
