Nikon's ultra-compact 40mm f/2 pancake for Z-mount — lightweight everyday prime with vintage character.

The Nikon Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 was released approximately 2021 as a compact and lightweight prime for Nikon Z-mount, providing a 40mm perspective at f/2 maximum aperture. At 170g and 52mm filter thread it is among the lightest native Z-mount primes. Dust and drip resistant. The 40mm perspective on full-frame is slightly wide of normal — a versatile everyday focal length.

The optical design uses 6 elements in 4 groups. Nine aperture blades. The 52mm filter thread is a Nikon heritage standard. At 170g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.29m. AF motor provides fast subject acquisition. Dust and drip resistant. f/2 maximum aperture. Full-frame coverage.

The 40mm f/2 provides a practical near-normal perspective for Nikon Z users who prefer a slightly wider-than-50mm view: less compression than 50mm, less dramatic than 35mm, with f/2 providing useful separation and low-light capability. At 170g it adds near-zero carry weight. On DX Z-mount bodies the 40mm provides 60mm equivalent — a short portrait focal length.

On the used market the Nikon Z 40mm f/2 is affordable as a lightweight native Z-mount prime. Condition checks: AF motor response, 52mm front element for marks, and barrel condition. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount FX (full-frame) and DX (APS-C) bodies.
