Olympus's fixed-lens 35mm autofocus compact — the Trip AF MD, 35mm f/3.8 Zuiko, motor drive, 1986.

The Olympus Trip AF MD was a fully automatic 35mm autofocus compact introduced in 1986, part of Olympus's later budget Trip AF line that carried the Trip name on from the earlier Trip 35. The MD suffix denotes the built-in motor drive that advances and rewinds the film; it is not a date-back designation. It followed the plain Olympus Trip AF of 1984 and sits well below the older Trip 35 in build.

It is a 35mm fixed-lens compact with a Zuiko 35mm f/3.8 lens and active autofocus, reported to use a single fixed shutter speed of about 1/125 second. It reads film speed by DX coding, has a built-in flash with a manual switch, motorised film advance and rewind, and a sliding lens cover that powers the camera. It runs on two AA batteries, and no date databack is fitted on this model.

It is a light plastic point-and-shoot built for snapshots, travel and street use, with straightforward aim-and-shoot operation and automatic winding. Its strengths are pocketability, ease of use, DX coding and the motor drive. The limits are real: a single fixed shutter speed and a modest f/3.8 lens make it best in good light or with flash.

Check that the sliding cover reliably powers the camera and that autofocus, flash and the motor all run on fresh AA cells. Battery-box corrosion is common on AA compacts, so inspect the contacts. Confirm the shutter and flash fire and that film transports without slipping. Light seals are minimal but check the film door; the fixed lens means no mount or adapter consideration.
