Great for: video general landscape portrait travel

Full-frame L-Mount mirrorless with 24.2MP sensor, 5-axis IBIS, and excellent video specs in a compact body.

The Panasonic Lumix S5D was announced in October 2024 as a European-region refresh of the original Lumix S5, positioned as an accessible full-frame L-Mount camera for stills and video production. The principal addition to the S5's specification is compatibility with the DJI LiDAR Range Finder Module — an attachment that provides LiDAR-assisted autofocus, extending the capability of the body's DFD contrast-based AF system for tracking moving subjects. The S5D sits below the S5 II, which uses true phase-detect AF. It retains the S5's 24.2MP full-frame sensor, 6.5-stop IBIS, and video-capable 4K recording.

The 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor pairs with the Venus Engine processor. The DFD contrast-based AF system covers 332 areas; the optional DJI LiDAR Range Finder Module (sold separately) adds LiDAR-based focus assistance for improved acquisition with moving subjects. 4K records internally at up to 60fps in 4:2:0 10-bit; 4K at 30fps is supported in 4:2:2 10-bit. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at up to 6.5 stops with compatible Dual IS 2 lenses. Battery life approximately 440 shots using the DMW-BLK22, body weight approximately 714g with battery and card, dual SD slots (one UHS-II, one UHS-I).

The S5D's practical positioning is as an affordable full-frame L-Mount body for photographers and videographers who do not require the S5 II's phase-detect AF. For studio, landscape, and controlled event photography where subject movement is moderate, the DFD AF system is adequate. The DJI LiDAR integration extends AF capability for video-oriented use: documentary, interview, and run-and-gun work where the module provides real-world tracking benefit. 4K/60p 10-bit internal and the 6.5-stop Dual IS provide a capable video platform. L-Mount access covers Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica native optics.

On the used market the S5D is a 2024 product with limited used availability. The principal comparison is with the S5 II: the S5 II provides phase-detect AF for reliably tracking fast subjects — the defining limitation of the S5D's contrast-based system. Where LiDAR attachment is not part of the use case, the S5 II's PDAF is a more versatile solution for moving subjects. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both SD card slots, and weather sealing at mount and body. The DMW-BLK22 battery is shared with the S5 II. Compatible with all L-Mount lenses from Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica.
