The Ricoh L-20 Date is a simple 35mm compact from Ricoh's L series of budget point-and-shoots, built for buyers wanting automatic film loading and winding without paying for autofocus. The dateback variant imprints the date onto each frame, a common add-on for family-snapshot cameras of its era.

It carries a fixed 35mm lens at f/4.5, three elements in three groups, fixed-focus from 1m to infinity with an infinity switch rather than autofocus. The shutter runs at a single mechanical 1/125 second with automatic exposure, and a CdS cell lights a red LED in the finder to warn of low light. ISO 100, 200, 400 and 1000 are supported; the flash recycles in about 6 seconds, reaching roughly 1.2-3.1m.

As a fixed-focus, fixed-aperture design the L-20 Date trades creative control for simplicity: no focusing ring, no aperture selection and no self-timer, just compose within the 80%-coverage finder and shoot. The low-light LED is the only cue the photographer gets before the shutter fires.
