The Samsung S860 sits in Samsung's S series of compact digital cameras from the late 2000s, a range built around straightforward, affordable snapshot shooting rather than advanced features. It reached shops in early 2008 as an entry-level option in a crowded compact camera market.

It carries a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor with 8.1 effective megapixels and a 3x optical zoom lens spanning a 38-114mm equivalent range, plus additional digital zoom. Composition relies on a 2.4-inch TFT LCD with 230,000 dots, as the body has no optical or electronic viewfinder. Storage is via SD cards, with a small proprietary battery providing power.

Build and handling are typical of low-cost compacts from this period: a plastic body, limited manual override, and automatic modes doing most of the work. Image quality is adequate for prints and web sharing in good light but shows the noise and softness common to small CCD sensors once indoors or in shade.

These sell cheaply secondhand, mainly as basic point-and-shoot backups. Worth checking are the battery's remaining capacity, whether the zoom lens extends and retracts smoothly, and that the LCD is free of dead pixels or moisture damage under the screen.
