The Symmar-S 240mm f/5.6 extended Schneider-Kreuznach's 1961 Symmar-S line toward 8x10 inch work, serving as a long-normal lens for 5x7 and a usable, if movement-limited, standard lens on 8x10. It was later updated as an Apo-Symmar.

Construction follows the family's six-element, four-group symmetrical plasmat formula, multi-coated, typically fitted in a Copal 1 shutter. Image circle is approximately 338mm at f/22, covering 5x7 with room to spare and 8x10 with only modest movements.

Its longer focal length compresses perspective slightly compared with the 150mm and 180mm siblings, useful for portraits and architectural details where a wide-angle look is unwanted, though corner performance still needs smaller apertures to sharpen fully.
