Sigma's dedicated 1:1 macro for DSLR mounts — sharp at macro distances with smooth manual focus.

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro is the non-OS (no optical stabilisation) version of Sigma's full-frame macro prime, providing 1:1 magnification at 0.31m minimum focus distance. The Nikon F version uses screwdrive AF from the camera body. At 460g and 58mm filter thread it is lightweight for a full-frame 1:1 macro prime. The EX designation was Sigma's premium quality tier before the Art/Contemporary/Sports categorisation.

The optical design uses 11 elements in 10 groups. Eight aperture blades. The 58mm filter thread is standard. At 460g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.31m at 1:1 magnification. Screwdrive AF (Nikon F) requires a body with an internal AF drive motor — D40/D60 and D3xxx/D5xxx bodies will not autofocus this lens. No optical stabilisation. f/2.8 maximum aperture.

The 105mm focal length at 1:1 provides greater working distance between lens front and subject than 50mm or 60mm macros: at 0.31m from sensor to subject at 1:1, approximately 17cm of clearance exists between front element and subject — practical room for lighting setups at high magnification. Without OS, a tripod or focusing rail is the preferred support for extended macro sessions at 1:1 magnification.

On the used market the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro is affordable as a lightweight full-frame macro prime. Condition checks: screwdrive AF engagement on a compatible body, focus ring smoothness through the full macro range, 58mm front element for marks, and aperture blades for oil contamination. The later Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM adds optical stabilisation. Compatible with Nikon F-mount bodies with built-in AF drive motors.
