The Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM (SAL2470Z, original version) was released approximately 2006 as the professional standard zoom for Sony Alpha A-mount full-frame. Seventeen elements in 13 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades. 77mm filter thread. At 955g. 0.34m MFD. SSM (Supersonic wave Motor) in-lens autofocus.

The optical design uses 17 elements in 13 groups (2 aspherical + 2 ED elements; T* anti-reflective coating). Nine rounded aperture blades. The 77mm filter thread. At 955g the lens is substantial. Minimum focus distance of 0.34m. SSM (in-lens Supersonic wave Motor) for fast, quiet AF on all A-mount bodies. f/2.8 constant aperture. Full-frame coverage. Sony A-mount.

The SAL2470Z's SSM motor enables AF on all A-mount bodies and on E-mount bodies via the LA-EA1 passive adapter — the in-lens motor removes dependency on the camera body AF drive. The original SAL2470Z (955g) was succeeded by the SSM II (SAL2470Z2, 2015, 974g, revised formula) — both use the same 77mm filter thread and Zeiss T* coating lineage.
