Sony's compact power zoom ultra-wide for FE — constant f/4 from 16-35mm with smooth video zoom operation.

The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G (SELP1635G) was released in 2022 as a power zoom ultra-wide for Sony FE full-frame bodies — the PZ designation indicates a motorised servo zoom ring rather than a manual zoom. At 353g and 72mm filter thread it is very compact for a 16-35mm full-frame zoom. Seven aperture blades. Primary use case is video production where silent, consistent zoom speed is required.

The optical design uses 13 elements in 12 groups including aspherical, ED aspherical, Super ED, and ED elements. Seven aperture blades. The 72mm filter thread. At 353g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.28m. Motorised power zoom with variable speed control. f/4 maximum aperture. No weather sealing.

The motorised zoom is the SELP1635G's defining video feature: a manual zoom ring on a camera requires the operator's hand to physically move the ring, causing vibration visible on the sensor. A servo zoom maintains constant zoom speed without physical contact with the barrel, enabling smooth broadcast-quality zoom transitions. At 353g, the lens is compact enough for gimbal rigs where balance sensitivity limits payload.
