Sony's 2002 top Mavica — a 2MP floppy-and-Memory-Stick compact, 1600x1200, 3x zoom, MPEG video.

The Sony Mavica MVC-FD200 was a fixed-lens digital compact released in February 2002 as the higher-resolution member of the final floppy-disk Mavica pair. Announced with the FD100, it represented Sony's last generation of the dual-media concept before the line was retired in favour of flash-card Cyber-shot models.

It was a fixed-lens compact with a 2.1-megapixel CCD giving around 2.0 effective megapixels, recording stills at up to 1600x1200 pixels. The lens offered a 3x optical zoom. Storage spanned both 1.44MB 3.5-inch floppy disks and Memory Stick flash media. The camera added an MPEG video mode and a ClipMotion animated-GIF feature, plus USB connectivity and a Sony InfoLithium battery.

The FD200 suited general and travel snapshots for buyers who wanted the higher resolution of the pair alongside floppy and Memory Stick flexibility. The MPEG movie mode and animated-GIF option broadened its use beyond stills. The 3x zoom kept the body compact, though the floppy drive remained a slow path, so most heavier use relied on Memory Stick storage.

Buying used, test both the floppy drive and the Memory Stick slot for reliable reading and writing. Inspect the LCD for stuck or dead pixels, run the zoom, and confirm door and eject latches. The proprietary InfoLithium battery may need an aftermarket cell. Check for CCD banding or dropped frames. As the last floppy Mavica, it holds budget and collector interest rather than working value.
