Sony Mavica MVC-FD75 — VGA digital camera recording to 3.5in floppy disks, 1998 novelty

The Mavica MVC-FD75 belonged to Sony's Mavica FD series of the late 1990s, a distinctive line of digital cameras that recorded images directly onto standard 3.5-inch floppy disks rather than removable memory cards, making file transfer as simple as inserting the disk into a computer's floppy drive.

It uses a small CCD sensor producing VGA-class resolution images, paired with a Sony-branded zoom lens, and composes shots via an optical viewfinder and a rear LCD monitor. Images save as JPEG files directly to a standard 3.5-inch floppy disk inserted into the camera body, with power from a rechargeable battery pack.

Floppy disk storage was the FD series' defining novelty, letting non-technical users skip cables, card readers, and drivers entirely at a time when digital photography workflows were still unfamiliar, at the cost of very low image resolution by any later standard.

These now sell mainly as retro-tech curiosities and collector pieces rather than usable cameras, since floppy disks and drives are largely obsolete. Check the floppy disk mechanism for smooth eject and read operation, and confirm the battery and charger still function.
