The Sony Mavica MVC-FD83 was a fixed-lens digital compact in Sony's Mavica family, released in 1999. Like the rest of the line, it stored pictures directly onto standard 3.5-inch floppy disks, a format chosen because almost every PC of the period could read them without extra hardware. The FD83 was a mid-entry model that traded the very long zoom of some siblings for a more pocketable body and a slightly higher pixel count.

It was a fixed-lens compact recording stills at up to 1024x768 pixels, a resolution of roughly 0.8 megapixels. The lens used a 3x optical zoom, shorter than the telephoto-focused Mavicas but easier to handle. Storage was on 1.44MB 3.5-inch floppy disks, with no separate card slot. A rear LCD served for framing and review, and the camera ran on a Sony InfoLithium rechargeable battery.

The FD83 suited everyday snapshots, family records and images destined for screen or email. Its floppy storage made sharing straightforward on contemporary computers, while the modest zoom kept the camera compact for its type. The main limits were low resolution by later standards and the small number of frames each floppy could hold at full quality, which meant frequent disk swaps on longer outings.
