Sony Mavica MVC-FD85 — 2000 digital compact recording 1280x960 stills and clips to floppy disk

Sony's Mavica FD series became a fixture of late-1990s digital photography by recording straight onto 3.5-inch floppy disks instead of memory cards. The MVC-FD85, released in 2000, sat toward the higher-resolution end of that floppy-disk lineup as Sony pushed the format toward its limits.

It captures stills at up to 1280x960 pixels as JPEG files, fitting several images on one 1.44MB floppy disk, and adds short MPEG-1 video clips at 320x240 resolution and about 16fps for up to 15 seconds. A CCD sensor, built-in autofocus zoom lens and a small flip-out LCD complete the camcorder-styled body.

The step up to roughly 1.2-megapixel stills and basic video made the FD85 more capable than earlier FD Mavicas, though floppy disks limited image count and pushed Sony toward Memory Stick storage soon after. It stayed popular with office and estate-agent users valuing instant readable output over image quality.

As a working camera today the FD85 is a curiosity rather than a practical shooter, so buyers should confirm the floppy drive reads and writes reliably, the LCD hinge and screen are undamaged, and a suitable rechargeable battery is included, since Sony's own packs are long out of production.
