Tamron's 200-500mm f/6.9 super-telephoto zoom launched with the Adaptall-2 system in 1979 as model 06A, continuing a range Tamron had already offered under its original Adaptall mount from the mid-1970s as the Z-500 and CZ-500. It gave Adaptall users an affordable route to long telephoto reach.

The unusual f/6.9 maximum aperture reflects the compromises needed to keep a 200-500mm design manageable in size and cost, well before autofocus super-telephotos existed. Like other Adaptall-2 lenses, it takes interchangeable adapters for Canon FD, Nikon F, Minolta MD, Olympus OM, Pentax K, Konica AR, Contax/Yashica and M42.
